Bridal portrait sessions
are a Southern tradition where the bride takes portraits (typically 1-2 months before the wedding) in her full wedding day attire – hair, makeup, jewelry, veil, bouquet, and of course, the dress. Generally a large 16x20 portrait from the session is displayed at the reception near the wedding cake. In many cases the large photo is given as a gift to the Mother of the Bride after the wedding, with smaller photos being given to the Groom and the Father of the Bride, as well.

Not only is a bridal session one of the few times that a woman gets to get primped and polished and take gorgeous portraits of herself, but it’s also a great trial run for the wedding day look. The majority of brides who shoot with me end up changing something about their wedding day look after the bridal session. Maybe they realized the dress was too big, or the shoes gave her blisters, or the eye makeup was too intense, or the hair kept falling in her eyes and annoying her, or the hydrangeas in the bouquet wilted and browned in the sun. Each time, the bride was able to make adjustments BEFORE the wedding day. After all, most brides do a trial run of hair and makeup anyway – at least put that beauty to good use!

New Paragraph

Engagement portraits are typically photographed a couple of months before the wedding. Although many engaged couples have been together for several years, they may not have a great photo of themselves as a couple.

When doing an engagement session, you may be tempted to wear the cute new shirt you just bought, or those amazing heels that you only bring out for special occasions. However, just because you love something doesn’t mean it is ideal for photos. Here is a general guideline of what works:

WHAT TO WEAR FOR PORTRAITS
Outfits in the same color family (blues, earthtones, etc) or with the same accent color, Solids or simple patterns, That sexy little black dress! Comfortable clothes you can sit, stand, and move in,Nice jeans, paired with a dressy top, Accessories like statement necklaces, jackets, hats, scarves,
Bringing one dressy outfit and one casual outfit

THINGS YOU MIGHT WANT TO BRING WITH YOU
Flats (if you plan on wearing heels, just to walk around in while we’re not taking photos) ; Numbers or a sign with your wedding date for creating Save the Dates ; Any props you want to use – for example un umbrella, a football, cowboy boots, your pets, a picnic basket, or anything that you both enjoy doing together

Guys, you look good in just about everything, but remember to match the “tone” of your partner’s outfit. If they are dressy, you should be too! If you plan on tucking your shirt in, make sure the shirt fits you well and is not too baggy, or you might end up with an unintentional muffin-top effect. Also make sure that your belt matches your shoes and that your socks are in good shape and the appropriate color.
If you’re going somewhere very edgy and urban, wear something sophisticated and dressy. If you’re going somewhere artsy and whimsical, go for trendier styles and fun layers. If you’re going somewhere outdoorsy, wear something more romantic and light.
